Mosaic workshop: learn woodworking from a craftsman

By taking part in an artistic workshop with a professional, you can put your creativity and manual skills to the test and create a unique work of art! Funbooker invites you to create a beautiful fresco during a mosaic workshop.

The different tools needed to create a mosaic

Mosaic is the decorative art of assembling fragments of material, called tesserae, with plaster or putty. Different tools are involved in mosaic making:

  • Mosaic pliers: these enable you to cut the tesserae that will be used to build your fresco. There are several types of mosaic cutter, depending on your skill level and the type of material you've chosen: Zag-Zag cutters (with or without bag) - a sturdy, easy-to-handle tool that prevents splashing - generic mosaic cutters, Montolift cutters or Leponitt cutters.
  • Glass cutters: for cutting glass, mirror, earthenware or stained-glass tiles without breaking them. It scratches the surface until it breaks cleanly and precisely.
  • Trencher: the pedestal-mounted trencher is a support on which to position the materials to be fragmented.
  • The hammer: the hammer is a striking tool used in conjunction with the trencher. You can create tesserae with stone, marble or enamel. Strikes should be aimed at the edge of the cutter.

Materials used in mosaics

  • Tesserae can be extracted from natural stones such as marble. This rock is appreciated for its high resistance to wear. It is, however, difficult to cut.
  • Glass enamel mosaics, a stone made from glass paste, date back to Roman times. It produces a brilliant, luminous result. It is preferred for wall frescoes rather than pavements, as it is not very resistant to rubbing.
  • Briare enamels, on the other hand, are ready-to-use: heat-, water- and frost-resistant.
