Towed buoy: everything you need to know about this crazy activity!

What is a towed buoy?

A towed buoy is a nautical activity in which a boat pulls an inflatable buoy, in fresh or salt water, at speeds of up to 30 km/hour. It's an unforgettable experience that's full of thrills!

You can practice sitting, standing or lying down, depending on the shape of the buoy. Depending on the model, the buoy can resemble a boat, a banana or a sofa, among others. The instructor in charge of driving the boat adapts its speed to your needs.

How a towed buoy session works

The course of a towed buoy session is often as follows:

  • Welcome, briefing and equipment
  • The centers usually have changing rooms where you can put on your bathing suit and lifejacket.
  • Here we go: the aim is to hold on to the buoy while the pilot tries to throw you off. If you're brave and/or a thrill-seeker, the pilot can link together a series of turns, wave jumps and various obstacles!
  • The session lasts 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the center. It's very important that the session isn't too long, especially if you're new to the activity, as hanging on to the buoy takes a lot of effort.
