What is hang-gliding?

The shape and history of hang-gliding

The hang glider is recognizable by its triangular shape, resembling a boomerang or kite. It flies on air power alone, without a motor. Hobbyists will fly with an experienced pilot, who will steer the hang glider by maneuvering the bar from left to right, and the wing tilt from front to back.

The movements are highly instinctive, achieved by leaning the body to the desired side to influence the center of gravity.

A NASA engineer drew the first outline in the 1950s, before the practice exploded in France in the 1970s. Clubs and schools flourished. Since 1970, hang-gliding has been a member of the Fédération Française de Vol Libre (French Free Flight Federation), and today boasts a large number of enthusiasts.

A thrilling activity

Hang-gliding is an extreme sport, as it can easily reach speeds of 100km/h! Those with a taste for adrenalin can even perform acrobatics in mid-air. Hang gliding is often compared to paragliding, which is similar but more contemplative.

Hang-gliding is open to all, provided you're in good physical shape and have no medical contraindications. A 3-month medical certificate is required.

In addition, you need to be rigorous in following the instructions for safe flying:

  • Don't be seasick or afraid of heights (the speed of flight can shake you up!).
  • Helmets must be worn
  • Have a harness equipped with foam or an airbag
  • A reserve parachute
  • A radio for long-distance flights
  • Be vigilant and respect safe distances in flight
  • Pay close attention to meteorological and aerological conditions
  • Have appropriate personal equipment (sunglasses, gloves, windbreaker, shoes, etc.).
