France is in crisis, threatened by imminent bankruptcy. Mirabeau has given you a mission: to raise 57 million livres to pay off France’s staggering debt. Today, it’s up to you to change history.

To do so, a code is hidden in Versailles that will unlock a U.S. sovereign fund; the Americans don’t want you to find this code. Nevertheless, this fund exists; it was negotiated by the King’s Secret Service during the American War of Independence, which made us friends with the New World but ruined France, leading to the Revolution.

You have two hours to find this code. Remember : “It is not a matter of leading the revolution—which has already taken place— but of holding it back.” Together, and thanks to your daring, will you succeed?

Historical Context
Louis XVI convened the Estates-General in Versailles beginning in May 1789. They were tasked with saving France from bankruptcy, but nothing went as planned, and they were transformed into the National Assembly, leading to other unforeseeable events... From May to October 1789, Versailles was the stage for hopes of a new world during five months that changed history.

Activity Overview

• Meet in front of the statue of Louis XIV on the Place d’Armes in front of the Palace of Versailles. Your historical guide will transportyou back to 1789. He or she will hand you your game envelopes.
• Would you like to split into several teams? That’s possible—there are multiple routes available.
• You’ll explore the route using your game booklet and your intuition.
• For two hours, you’ll try to find the clues and unlock the secret. You’ll pass through key historical sites from 1789 in Versailles: the Hôtel des Menus-Plaisirs, the Salle du Jeu de Paume, the former Hôtel des Affaires Étrangères, the Place d’Armes, and Saint-Louis Cathedral.
• You’ll be where the National Assembly was born, where the Jeu de Paume Oath took place, where the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was drafted, and where the Women’s March arrived triumphant and full of hope. This is where Madame du Barry, Marie Antoinette, Louis XVI, La Fayette, and Mirabeau made history—and now you take their place to change it.
• End of the game: a “course of scents” leading to the final challenge—tasting a special macaron based on a recipe presented to Marie-Antoinette.
