At the end of the 18th century, major public health problems associated with the city's cemeteries led to the decision to transfer their contents to an underground site.
The site was consecrated "Ossuaire municipal de Paris" on April 7, 1786, and from then on took on the mythical name of "Catacombes", in reference to the Roman catacombs that have fascinated the public since their discovery.
Today, you can plunge into the heart of history and explore at your own pace the galleries where the skulls are carefully stacked.
