Everything you need to know about sled dogs

What is a sled dog?

Dog sledding is an ancestral form of winter locomotion, in which a team of powerful dogs pulls a sled across the snow. These animals, often Siberian huskies, Alaskan malamutes or Greenlanders, are selected for their endurance, strength and ability to work as a team.

The musher plays a key role in guiding the dogs, using voice commands and precise know-how. He ensures the dogs' coordination and well-being, and adapts the route according to weather conditions.

The different sled dog activities

There are several ways to discover this activity:

  • Sled dog rides: from the comfort of your sled, you let the musher (sled driver) guide the team.
  • Introduction to driving: after a basic training course, you can learn to drive the dogs yourself under the supervision of a professional.
  • Cani-raquette and ski-joëring: variants in which you are attached to a dog while snowshoeing or skiing.
  • Cani-rando: a year-round activity in which you are linked to a dog by a belt and a cushioned lanyard for a dynamic hike in the great outdoors.

Sled dogs: enduring and fascinating companions

The sled dog is an athlete cut out for effort and rigorous climatic conditions. The most common breeds include :

  • The Siberian Husky, recognizable by its light eyes and elegant appearance.
  • The Alaskan Malamute, more massive and very powerful.
  • The Greenlander, robust and hardy, often used for polar expeditions.
  • The Samoyed, white-coated and smiling, very sociable.

These dogs work in packs under the guidance of the musher and are organized into different roles to optimize traction:

  • Leaders: lead dogs who open the way.
  • Swing dogs: located just behind the leaders to support them.
  • Team dogs: the bulk of the team, providing the driving force.
  • Wheel dogs: the most powerful, close to the sled, in charge of the heavy pulling.
