Surfing: A Fun and Refreshing Activity!

What is Surfing?

Surfing is a water activity: it involves riding waves while balanced on a specially designed board. This requires knowing how to swim.

A beginner surfer, from junior to senior, can go to a water sports center to surf on a shortboard during group lessons or private lessons, for beginners or advanced learners, with the center's instructor.

The History of Surfing

Surf-riding, in English, means riding the wave. It is usually practiced on the ocean's edge, on big waves, but not always. This leisure activity is an integral part of certain Pacific cultures such as Hawaiian and Tahitian cultures, where it existed before modern times.

Although it has become popular worldwide since Polynesia in the 20th century, the discipline of surfing also existed in certain regions of Africa, Australia, or Peru. The general meaning of "surfing" encompasses all practices on a surfboard, whether standing, sitting, kneeling, or lying down.

Different Types of Surfing

Traditionally, surfing takes place on the sea or ocean on sunny days. Since 2016, surf parks have been multiplying in France: they make it possible to discover this discipline inland, on regular waves, regardless of weather conditions.

There are 3 types of indoor surfing:

  • Wave pools with pulse systems
  • FlowRider waves replicating the sensations experienced in the ocean but requiring significant energy expenditure.
  • River surfing waves, on a smaller scale

How a Surf Lesson Works

Time slots can be booked directly online on the Funbooker website. The meeting then takes place on the beach for classic surfing and in a surf park for indoor surfing.

After a briefing with the instructors, you will be equipped: equipment rental, including wetsuits and surfboards, is often included in the price. You then need to learn to stand on a board before getting acquainted with the waves.

When to Take a Surf Lesson?

You can experience surfing all year round, especially thanks to surf parks or water parks! Outdoor surfing is an activity that allows you to enjoy the good weather in summer or on a weekend with friends by the seaside.

Clubs are waiting for your events: bachelor/bachelorette parties, team building, birthdays... Tailored pedagogy is at the heart of professional teaching: have fun without moderation on small waves, big waves, or your very first waves! You will keep an unforgettable memory of this aquatic day!
