Activity description :
- All day
- Up to 2 people
- From 8 years old
During this knife-making workshop with Nicolas, shape your knife using the “stock removal” method—the precision technique used by today’s knife makers. Here, there’s no forge or hammer: your blade is born from a sheet of steel, cut to shape and then sculpted by sanding. Clean lines, even grinding, and a meticulous finish: every knife is one-of-a-kind!
Schedule for the day:
- Welcome and safety briefing: coffee, introduction to the workshop and machinery, protective gear, and safety instructions.
- Tracing the outline: You’ll sketch the silhouette of your knife on the steel plate, including the blade shape and handle line.
- Cutting and drilling: You cut out the outline and drill holes in the tang for the future handle rivets.
- Grinding: At the backstand, you create the bevel on the cutting edge—the crowning achievement of stock removal.
- Heat treatments: quenching and tempering, to give the blade its hardness and strength.
- Handle assembly: You rivet the wood scales in place, then sand and round them off until the handle fits comfortably in your hand.
- Finishing and sharpening: polishing, protecting the wood and steel, and final sharpening.
Nicolas guides you step by step: each machine and each technique is explained to you before you try it yourself. Leave with your finished knife—a hardened blade and a wooden handle tailored to your hand—crafted entirely by you from start to finish!
